Ethics in R&D – Care and Use of Animals

At Sanofi, we are dedicated to conducting research ethically and responsibly. Sanofi U.S. follows the Sanofi Charter for the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. This charter, established in 2006, adheres to the 3R’s principle (Reduction/Replacement/ Refinement). In addition, the Culture of Care Program, which originated in our US affiliate has been implemented in other countries. It includes workshops for attendees from all segments of the company. These workshops are held quarterly and are designed to encourage participants to openly discuss their questions and concerns about this topic.

Researchers using laboratory animals at Sanofi U.S. are provided a variety of training courses using different methods, such as web-based training, classroom-style courses, and hands-on workshops. These researchers must complete specific training courses (both instructive & hands-on) before they can work with laboratory animals, thus ensuring the highest quality of animal care and welfare. All Sanofi U.S. animal facilities are accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC). We audit contract research organizations and animal suppliers on a rotating schedule to assure that they adhere to our strict standards regarding animal care and welfare.

Finding a Home for Beagles

In January 2011, Beagle Rescue League, Inc. was founded. This organization is a nonprofit corporation (applying for 501(c)3 status) formed for the purpose of rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing unwanted beagles. Beagle Rescue League also implemented a Lab and Leash division which is designed to help dogs retiring from research facilities.

In that same year, Sanofi U.S. R&D chose Beagle Rescue League, Lab and Leash Division as our third-party non-profit vendor for canine adoption. We developed our own dog adoption policy that covers any dog used for research. An internal dog adoption committee reviews and approves adoptions to the rescue organization. Why did we choose to do this? We are committed to our animals and felt this gives them a wonderful opportunity to continue their lives in happy homes. It speaks to the third “R” principle, which is “refinement.”
