Perspectives on Policy - Prevention

At Sanofi, we believe that the U.S. healthcare system must move from a sickness system to a wellness system.

We support efforts to reduce the overall disease burden and increase incentives for people to stay healthy. Our belief is that stronger, expanded prevention and wellness policies will benefit patients, and research and development.

In addition to our public policy advocacy on this topic, Sanofi supports prevention and wellness initiatives through partnerships and pilots. Our efforts include:

  • We have launched efforts to evaluate community-based prevention and treatment models in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas.
  • We have supported efforts by the National Governors Association to focus on chronic disease, and have developed new approaches to the reduction of disease burden.
  • We have developed and shared with state policymakers a best practices analysis of diabetes control and prevention efforts, with the goal of fostering improved disease management across the U.S.

Our partnerships demonstrate our commitment to engaging stakeholders who seek to improve health. Our collaborative work has included: the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the Children’s Health Fund, the CEO Roundtable on Cancer, the Clinton Foundation, the Joslin Diabetes Center, the Milken Institute, Minor League Baseball, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, the National Basketball Association, the National Council on Aging, the Philadelphia Health Initiative, and the STOP Obesity Alliance at George Washington University.

As government officials seek to advance prevention measures, Sanofi supports new policy approaches including:

  • Employee prevention and wellness programs (both public & private)
  • Tobacco product bans on public property
  • Tax and grant incentives to shape community models of prevention
  • Vaccination protocols
  • Chronic disease screenings and linkage to appropriate care
  • Value-based insurance premium discounts or rebates
  • Insurance premium rating factors to discount group premium rates
  • Care coordination models

Our work on prevention and wellness spans the governmental, private and not-for-profit sectors. Our actions support wellness in all areas of society and reflect the principles of individual responsibility, community effort, and healthy lifestyle education; especially regarding physical activity, nutrition and lifestyle choices.
