Sanofi Sponsors Hiking Heroes to Raise Awareness for Veteran Unemployment and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

As a company dedicated to supporting its community, Sanofi is proud to sponsor the “Hiking Heroes” initiative, created to help raise awareness of veteran unemployment and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by addressing social, personal and economic issues being faced by returning service men and women.

Veterans Sergeant First Class Eric Bourquin and Captain Sean Niquette embarked on the rarely conquered “Mission: Appalachian Trail Hike” in summer of 2013 to complete a 2,200 mile hike through 14 states to raise awareness of veteran employment and PTSD for returning military.

Bourquin and Niquette accepted the mission, as they had previously accepted military missions, with the intent to proclaim, “Mission accomplished.” Retired Sergeant First Class Bourquin was awarded two Bronze Stars with Valor for his heroic efforts in three deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. Captain Niquette served in Iraq following 9/11 and received the Purple Heart for rescuing several soldiers from wreckage.

When Niquette was unable to complete the trek, Bourquin was joined by Technical Sergeant Kevin Kitchen, who himself had served for more than 14 years in the Air Force and received a number of awards including the Bronze Star with Valor for his service in Kuwait and Iraq.

When Bourquin, Niquette and Kitchen returned from overseas, all were faced with issues surrounding unemployment and PTSD, leading to the creation and continued growth of The Hiking Heroes Foundation.
