Perspectives on Policy - Innovation

Through our public affairs efforts, we help create an external environment that supports innovation.

Our healthcare system – including patients, payers and providers – benefits from the value that biopharmaceutical innovation provides. Future generations of Americans will benefit as well.

We believe in open innovation through collaboration. This can be seen in our partnerships, including:

  • Our sponsorship of the American Diabetes Association’s Pathway initiative to transform diabetes research;
  • Our founding role in The Project Data Sphere Initiative to advance research by broadly sharing cancer trial data; and
  • Our establishment of the Collaborate I Innovate Challenge Series, where we partnered with the advocacy community to innovate together to find solutions.

Innovation doesn’t stop with new scientific discoveries. We believe it continues through new medicines and treatments for patients. We remain committed to working toward reducing the barriers that hinder the progress of turning science into medicine.

We do this in a number of ways:

  • Engaging with patients throughout R&D processes as we seek to increase opportunities for patients to participate in clinical trials;
  • Supporting the need for strong intellectual property rights enforcement; and
  • Fostering the continued growth of a scientific culture through education and awareness.

Creating an external environment that fosters innovation requires us to engage in health and science policy.
