Standing with You, Cheering for You: Recognizing All Those Working to Develop a COVID-19 Vaccine

John Shiver, PhD, Senior Vice President, Vaccines Global R&D, reflects on the tireless efforts of all those working to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

Never before, over the course of the 30+ years that I’ve been in vaccine and pharmaceutical R&D within the healthcare industry and in government labs, have I witnessed my colleagues, and an industry, coming together as a whole – to find an answer, to find a solution – to find a vaccine.

The scientific community is working together broadly across government, academic, and pharmaceutical groups in an unprecedented way to find rapid and effective medical and vaccine solutions for this global pandemic.

It’s been remarkable to watch. In March of this year, everything stopped. COVID-19 brought the world as we knew it to a screeching halt. The entire healthcare industry — including our Sanofi researchers, industrial affairs, and manufacturing colleagues — urgently pivoted focus to where it was needed most. For us, this meant developing a new vaccine faster than ever before. It has been nearly six months of non-stop work and we are not done yet.

To recognize this effort and encourage a collective leap to the goal line, Sanofi has developed a tribute featuring American football coach, former player, and current head coach at Arizona State University, Herm Edwards, whose motto is “dig deep, and never give up.”

Personally, and professionally, I have nothing but admiration and respect for these heroes I see every day, who I am proud to call colleagues.

We all see you. We all are behind you, cheering until that final whistle blows. And we are truly grateful for you.
