Inside Sanofi

Pride in Sanofi

Suncére Hernandez, Area Business Manager, Multiple Sclerosis, reflects on the significance of Sanofi’s commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Suncere HernandezI am the mother of three beautiful children all under the age of sixteen. At an early age, one of my children shared with me they that they identify as being a part of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) community. For some parents, this may have been a challenge but for me it has never felt like one.

I love my children very much and have always accepted them for who they are. I encourage them to believe in themselves and speak their truth confidently, while also being accepting of others. It breaks my heart when they tell me of friends who identify as gay or bisexual at a young age, but who live in fear that their parents and peers will not accept them. These children usually wind up spending lots of time with our family, where they can experience the love and acceptance they long for and deserve.

Earlier this year, I learned about some of our company’s external recognitions at a meeting for the Multiple Sclerosis, Oncology and Immunology (MSOI) sales force. Two of these awards in particular truly spoke to me – Sanofi’s recognition as a DiversityInc Top Company for LGBT Employees and as a Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality from the Human Rights Campaign.

As an Area Business Manager for the Multiple Sclerosis sales division for the past two years, I am continually impressed at the dedication that Sanofi has to the patients for whom we provide solutions. In learning about these recognitions, my heart swelled with pride at the dedication Sanofi has to the employees who work at the company, specifically in LGBTQ+ equality.

Since that meeting, I began collaborating with Inclusion and Diversity at Sanofi through the PRIDE Connect Employee Resource Group and this has culminated into one of the best experiences of my life.

On June 8, 2019, I led Sanofi’s first ever presence at the Boston Pride Parade. I was joined by teammates and colleagues from many different areas of our company, including some who brought their partners and children to march with us and celebrate our support of the LGBTQ+ community. One of my children was there with us and I couldn’t have been more proud of our family, of our company, and all those who helped in making this dream a reality.

It means the world to me that I work for a company that I am proud to represent. Sanofi is a company that strives to improve the lives of patients by providing solutions to a variety of health conditions, while also supporting its employees’ passions to make a difference in the world. We truly embody our motto “Empowering Life”!
