Sanofi has a strong commitment to the environment, which is demonstrated by our policies to actively reduce our global carbon footprint, our widespread recycling initiatives, and our dedication to both conserve natural resources and to combat negative impacts on climate change. Our commitment to the environment helps us to strengthen and solidify our dedication to patient health, as preserving the Earth ensures that we have the ability to protect our patients.
Sanofi believes that environmentally sound business practices are important to our future. We continuously seek ways to reduce our environmental impact through energy, water and waste reduction, efficient natural resource utilization and increased use of renewable energy sources.
Sanofi has a well-established Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy. One part of the policy speaks to our obligation to limit the impact of our operations on the environment. Environmental risk is addressed through our HSE Management System, which includes appropriate preventative and protective measures. Our HSE Management System also informs and educates employees in order to ensure their own health and safety and that of the environment. Employees are required and expected to abide by this policy.

Climate Change and Health
Climate Change & Health are fundamental issues for the world’s population because together they pose significant challenges to healthcare. Climate Change affects factors such as clean air, safe drinking water, food availability, and secure shelter.
Sanofi strives to reduce our environmental impact, so that we can contribute to decreasing the effects of climate change. This includes a two-pronged approach to reduce our carbon footprint and to combat diseases directly correlated with climate change.
Some examples of our efforts to reduce Sanofi’s energy and carbon footprint include:
- Maritime Shipping — We have begun to employ maritime shipping vs. the use of air freight in our transportation of vaccines. In this endeavor, we cut our CO2 emissions by 60 times and cut transport costs by 50%
- Virtual Meetings — These meetings help to eradicate the need for excess travel, resulting in the reduction of travel expenses as well as individual CO2 emissions.
- LEED Certifications — To create “green” buildings that are eco-friendly and promote a healthy work environment, Sanofi US and Genzyme follow the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design’s (LEED) strategies for the sustainable development of building sites.
As more CO2 and other greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, global warming levels will increase, leading to the proliferation of many fatal diseases that Sanofi currently combats, including malaria and dengue fever.

- Sanofi Pasteur has launched a vaccine research and development project targeting the prevention of Zika virus infection and disease.
At Sanofi, we have established a new global goal to reduce water consumption by 25% over a 10 year period (2010-2020). We continue to optimize existing operations to decrease water consumption, focusing on sites that are located in “water scarcity” areas. We are also looking at our wastewater treatment facilities at our sites comparing the best available technologies.
