Sanofi Scientist Gigi Abellard Serves America 250

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the milestone represents more than just a date on the calendar—it's a moment to reflect on the values that have shaped our nation and the people who continue to embody them today. For Gioranah "Gigi" Abellard, a Senior Associate Scientist at Sanofi and Navy Reserve service member, this historic anniversary holds deep personal meaning as she prepares to serve as a Civic 250 Volunteer during the 2026 World Cup in Boston.
The Power of Showing Up
Civic 250 is a Sanofi initiative that brings together volunteers from across Massachusetts to support Greater Boston communities during America’s 250th Anniversary. The initiative is built around encouraging volunteerism, leadership, and community service. Being selected as a Civic 250 Volunteer means being trusted to embody those values as part of a group of Sanofi employees committed to making an impact.
For Gigi, being selected through Sanofi's rigorous selection process was both a privilege and a natural extension of her commitment to civic responsibility and meaningful community impact. "Being selected was a tremendous honor because it recognized my dedication to making a positive impact beyond the workplace," she explains.

A Journey Rooted in Service
Gigi's path to this moment began with a simple fourth-grade volcano experiment that sparked her curiosity about science. But it was her experience in high school Key Club, helping raise funds for UNICEF's tetanus vaccination campaign, that showed her the powerful connection between science, medicine, and service. Growing up with financial hardships and later serving in the Navy exposed her to the impact that healthcare access has on individuals and historically under-supported communities.
Today, as a Senior Associate Scientist in Sanofi's Global Manufacturing Unit, Gigi helps create and improve the biological manufacturing processes used to make medicines—work that directly impacts patients' lives around the world. Having served nearly 11 years in the Navy Reserve, she brings a unique perspective to her scientific work.
The Navy taught me discipline, attention to detail, and the importance of maintaining high standards. In many ways, the military and scientific research share a similar approach: both require careful planning, following established protocols, and working toward a common objective.

This dual commitment to service and science has shaped who Gigi is today—and it's a balance she's been able to maintain with the help of Sanofi's unwavering support of veteran employees. "The company recognizes the value that service members bring to the workplace and has been incredibly supportive of my military obligations, allowing me to fulfill my duties without having to choose between my career and my service," Gigi explains. “This support has given me the confidence to continue growing professionally while remaining committed to serving our country.”
Why America's 250th Anniversary Matters
For Gigi, America 250 represents an opportunity to reflect on progress while recognizing the continued need to improve access to healthcare, education, and opportunity. Her selection as a Civic 250 Volunteer for the 2026 World Cup in Boston holds special significance. Growing up in the area where the World Cup will take place, she's witnessed firsthand how the tournament brings people of all backgrounds together. "Through sport alone, so many people can have a shared experience and purpose," she notes. Sanofi's support of America's semiquincentennial celebration reflects the company's broader commitment to civic engagement, scientific progress, and community impact—values that resonate deeply with Gigi on multiple levels.

A Message for the Future
As she looks ahead, Gigi plans to continue advancing as a Sanofi scientist while pursuing her goal of becoming a commissioned officer in the Navy. She sees these paths as complementary, with each strengthening her ability to lead and make an impact. “At Sanofi, I’m part of an organization that values service beyond the workplace,” she says. “As a scientist, I see how healthcare innovation can improve lives, and as a Navy Reservist, I’m driven to serve something larger than myself.”
Her message to the next generation is simple: “Embrace service in all its forms. Whether in science, the military, or your community, what matters is leaving things better than you found them. Don’t be afraid to take unconventional paths—some of the most meaningful careers are built at the intersection of service, science, and community.”
Stories like Gigi’s highlight how Sanofi employees contribute beyond the workplace—advancing science, supporting communities, and serving the country. Through initiatives like Civic 250 and the America 250 celebration, Sanofi is helping drive community impact while empowering employees to make a difference where they live and work.
